What is the Buddy Program
The buddy program is a system by which incoming exchange students are matched with LUISS students. The purpose of the Buddy program is not only to assist exchange and international students with practical matters regarding their settlement in the new country; it mainly aims at facilitating integration in the Italian academic life and the Italian student community.
The Buddy program is, above all, a great opportunity to make new friends from other parts of the world and to create long lasting intercultural friendships! In the framework of the program, the Buddy gets the opportunity to practice a foreign language, get acquainted with different cultures, develop his/her social skills; the buddy also gets the chance to participate to sponsored social events to meet his/her fellow Buddies and to participate to the exclusive ESN Roma LUISS events (trips, visits to special places of Rome, parties and the famous Speed Meeting!).
Who is the Buddy
Buddies are motivated students from LUISS, who sign up to provide a friendly support to a foreign student.
The candidate profiles of Buddy students are many:
previous exchange students willing to continue the international experience they had while abroad are natural candidates, but also other Italian students who are currently contemplating the idea of applying for an exchange program or simply curious about international life! Furthermore, the many international students who have been around for one semester or more, for sure have precious tips about how to survive in Rome to share with new incoming students: they also are natural candidates to become Buddies!
Requirements
The minimum requirements we ask for to become a Buddy are:
- To have spent at least one semester in Rome as a LUISS student;
- To be enrolled at LUISS for the upcoming semester;
- To be strongly motivated to make the incoming student’s experience in Rome an unforgettable one!
The amount of interaction and support between the Buddy and his student is completely dependent on the interests of both of them, except for some activities organized by ESN. Especially at the beginning of the semester, ice-breaker events will be organized, which Buddies are required to participate to with their students to facilitate mutual knowledge.
During the semester, Buddies are asked to do some activities with their student, like show them around the campus and the city alike at specified dates, help them with issues they might come across, take them to social events beyond ESN’s and support them in the integration process with the Italian community.
More details about the activities ESN expects Buddies to do with their students will be given during the training session organized before the arrival of the exchange students; training is also meant to prepare Buddies to the issues that might arise and to make sure that the relation Buddy – incoming student works smoothly, as to enjoy it the most !
